Frances Lim

Frances Lim

Clinical Psychologist (Malaysia)

Growing up, I had many opportunities to be involved in numerous community services, such as providing tuition to underprivileged kids and also serving in food shelters. Such experiences helped ignite my passion to join the helping profession, a decision I am glad I made.

I have a B.S. in Psychology (Bemidji State University, USA) and a Master in Clinical Psychology (HELP University, Malaysia). I am a member of the Malaysian Society of Clinical Psychologists (MSCP) and I adhere to the Code of Ethics of the American Psychological Association (APA). I was attached as a clinical psychologist with the Institute of Mental Health for two years, specializing in managing teens and adults with neurodevelopmental disorders and working with parents, caregivers and medical staff to ensure patients received sufficient care before returning to Malaysia.

Having been a youth leader and a lecturer in different avenues,, I am able to relate to teenagers and young adults who struggle with different life challenges – ranging from stress management, anxiety, adjustments to relational conflicts by employing therapeutic skills to journey alongside them while they try to better understand and face their challenges.

From my experience as a child educator, I believe that it is important to work with teachers and parents to respond more adequately to this new generation’s mental health struggles. To date, I have coached both teachers and parents on behavioural management techniques, appropriate discipline approaches and explored methods to build stronger relational bonds.

I particularly enjoy volunteering with disaster relief missions, having been deployed by Mercy Malaysia to provide psychological first aid after disasters nationally and internationally. Through this work, I have had the opportunity to witness different struggles faced by individuals and their families during traumatic events, and to help draw out their internal strengths and to learn coping skills.

Living with a rare progressive illness (Moyamoya Disease), it helped me learn the importance of acknowledging my struggle and identifying my sources of strength to cope. I believe that therapy can be a safe space to discover your coping skills and to process your emotions during times of difficulty. I have also undergone training to journey with patients who have been diagnosed with cancer, and their caregivers.

I am guided by the principles of Person-Centered approaches and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) which focuses on identifying our deepest values and exploring ways to engage in life meaningfully with said values while acknowledging the challenges faced. Admitting to the issues we face and seeking help is not a walk in the park, but it is the first step to enriching our lives and empowering ourselves to take action for our own benefit. As your therapist, I will partner with you as you learn to use your own personal strengths to overcome your struggles.

I am fluent in written and spoken English and Malay, and speak basic Cantonese.
