Lee Sook Huey

Clinical Psychologist (Malaysia)

My undergraduate thesis on mental illness stigma has helped me to understand how the fear of being judged may hinder us from seeking help from mental health professionals. Thus, I am very glad at your courage to allow yourself to take this first step to feeling more hopeful and living a more flourished life.

I may not know what is distressing you right now that lead to your decision to seek help.  When something is bothering us, we can become too immersed in it that it is hard to step back and take an objective view about what is happening. Just like being lost in a forest, sometimes a bird’s eye view will help us to find the way. Hence, whatever you presenting issues are, I hope that your journey in therapy will help you to have a wider perspective, and perhaps a different angle of your issues, so that the change process can happen to help you work through your issues more effectively.

In addition to KIN & KIDS Marriage, Family and Child Therapy Center, I work closely with a psychiatrist as his private clinic for collaborative treatment. My previous clinical experience include working with individuals with severe mental illnesses at Kajang Hospital and Eve Caring Center, patients suffering from chronic pain at the Pain Clinic Selayang Hospital, human trafficking victims at a government woman shelter, and college students at HELP University’s Center for Psychological and Counselling Services (CPCS).

I have a keen interest in children’s emotional and psychological wellbeing.  I am currently working with the special kids at TDJ Education and volunteering at Yayasan Sunbeams home. As a clinical psychologist, I also conduct psychological assessments for a wide range of children mental health problems, which include, learning disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, intellectual disability, autism, and selective mutism. I have experience giving educational and motivational talk to teachers and students at schools, as well as facilitated school holiday programs in international schools and a learning center. During my clinical training, I have had the opportunity to worked with children at SHELTER Home for Children and National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM).

In therapy, I will help you set clear and specific therapy goals, work collaboratively with you to identify your inner resources and to build new coping skills. I am mainly guided by the cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy approaches.

I adhere to the Code of Ethics of the American Psychological Association (APA), so you may be assured on a safe and professional encounter. I believe in continuing education, and I constantly update myself on the latest research and interventions as a consumer of journals articles and other resources, as well as by attending workshops and conferences.

I speak English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Malay and Hokkien.
