My own journey into psychology began at the age of 14 where friends pointed out to me how I was becoming angry and closed off because of the isolation that I perceived myself to be in. Their comments sparked a chord within me and motivated me to develop a deeper understanding of myself and a motivation to change. I realized that no matter how dark, angry, sad or desperate I felt, there is always hope. This realization also began my love affair with psychology and led me to believe that hope resides in all of us; all we need to do is find it.
I worked as a graduate tutor in HELP’s Clinical Psychology program for several semesters. I completed an 8-month practicum at the HELP Centre for Psychological and Counselling Services (CPCS) under the supervision of Dr. Rachel Ting, California-Licensed Psychologist, and another eight-month internship at Hospital Kajang, where I obtained advanced training and supervision on Cognitive Behavioral Psychology (CBT) from Dr. Firdaus Mukhtar, a veteran clinical psychologist in Malaysia. I completed my Master’s thesis, titled “Contribution of personality-vulnerability factors towards the onset of depression”.
I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. at the University Putra Malaysia. My doctorate research is focused on determining the effectiveness of utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in a group setting for the treatment of depression.
As a clinical psychologist, I keep up with my clinical work by providing psychological assessments and therapy to both adults and children. I also have experienced assisting Dr. Rachel Ting in conducting several CBT workshops to mental health professionals in Malaysia.
Throughout my clinical experience working at a university psychology center, a government hospital and a private practice, I have had the opportunity to work with individuals from a myriad of races, cultures and backgrounds. I am comfortable working with adults and children, both as a therapist and as an assessment clinician conducting various types of psychological assessments (e.g. cognitive, personality, learning difficulties etc.). I have worked with individuals suffering from depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia and autism. As a member of the Malaysian Society of Clinical Psychologists (MSCP), I abide by their Code of Ethics, which is built upon the American Psychological Association’s own Code of Ethics.
My main therapeutic orientation is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is an empirically based intervention that focuses on how our thoughts influence our behaviors and emotions given a particular situation. Such thoughts are often automatic and escape our awareness, thus, eliciting higher awareness and control over these thoughts will allow us to better control over the way we feel or behave. Research has indicated that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has been effectively used to treat clients who are suffering from depression and anxiety. I am also well versed in behavioral interventions which have been found to be an effective method of helping children with behavioral, social and learning difficulties. Behavioral therapy includes techniques such as token economy, hierarchical learning and reinforcement strategies.
I believe that significant relationships in our lives are what shape us to be the individuals that we are. I also believe that therapy is a collaborative process between my clients and myself and it is the relationship that I build with my clients that is essential for therapy to be effective. As the master of your own life, I invite you to bring me along in your journey so that together, we may try and overcome whatever obstacles that you may be facing. I believe that life is how you make it to be, and I hope I’ll be able to play a part in helping you to live your life to the fullest.
